"Witch Gathering Night" in Germany - Witch City Goslar- Witch Festival
Goslar Goslar is located in the Harz Mountains of Lower Saxony, Germany, known as the "Rome of the North" in ancient times, and now known as the German 🇩🇪 witch city. It is included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list. Goslar is famous for its annual traditional Witch festival!
The night of April 30 to May 1, known as the Night of Walpugis, is a traditional festival in pre-Christian Northern and Central Europe, with the custom of fire sacrifice.
Walpurgis Night
To welcome the arrival of spring, April 30 is traditional Walpurgis night, the traditional Witch festival, where locals and visitors take to the streets wearing witch masks and broomsticks 🧹 dressed as characters such as werewolf 🐺, witch 🧙♀️, unicorn 🦄️ and dragon 🐲.
In the past, superstitious people believed that witches would gather on this night. They have a meeting place: Broken Hill. This is the highest peak of the Harz Mountains in northern Germany. The witches flew over the Broken River on broomsticks. They sang and danced around the fire. It is said that this ritual is performed in order to unite with the devil.
How did the name "Valpugis Night" come about? May 1 is the name day of the Abbess Walpurigs (710-779), also known as Walpurigs, Walburga, or Walburg. She was canonized on May 1 for performing miracles. Valpugis can also ward off evil spirits.
But many centuries before "Valpugis Night" was "invented," the Celts and Germanic tribes were already dancing and singing into May. They celebrate the end of winter and welcome the arrival of summer.

On May 1, the Midsummer pillar Maibaum, also known as the Maypole, was erected in Goslar Marktplatz. The midsummer pillars are decorated with ribbons, flowers and greenery. (Many German villages erect midsummer poles on this day, and villages compete with each other to see which is the most beautifully decorated.)
