📍Waiotapu Thermal Park Lady Knox Geyser
⏰ Business hours: 8:30-4:30pm, last admission at 3pm
Most people will choose the geothermal park near Rotorua, but this time seeing the highly recommended Lonely Planet, decided to visit this Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland between Rotorua and Taup, actually not far, 25 minutes by car.
Known as "one of the most surreal places in the world", we, as appearance level lovers, chose it for its pallet-like champagne pool and Lady Knox Geyser!
These geothermal phenomena, due to the active release of hot rocks and minerals underground, over thousands of years formed the present colorful landscape, purple is manganese oxide, reddison-brown is iron oxide, yellow is sulfur, pink is mercury sulfide, and white is clay. The Green Pool, especially the green Pool, is really amazing to me, the fluorescent green, because of the high acidity. The whole park was steaming like a fairyland.
We arrived at 10:00, because at 10:15, there will be lady Knox geyser eruption performance, although it is artificial, because of the children, so I really want to let them have a look to open their eyes, and sure enough, my daughter was very excited and happy to watch, and there were many people there. Everyone was there early and orderly!
waiotapu, located in Rotorua on New Zealand's North Island, is one of the famous geothermal attractions, which means sacred water in Maori. The colorful geothermal wonders are stunning, with active volcanoes, white steam fountains, colorful hot springs and exotic geothermal animals in the park. The trees on either side of the path were rusty yellow, I wasn't sure if it was from volcanic eruptions at some point or from being surrounded by sulfurous steam for years.
Along the way, you can see various colors of crater rock walls, as well as hot mud in the smoke, like God overturned in the human color palette, worthy of being one of the film's Lord of the Rings!
The most impressive is the colorful champagne pool and matcha pool, pure natural color without any filter! It is also one of the locations where Liu Shishi and Wu Qilong took wedding photos in New Zealand.
Champagne Pool is a large hot spring with a diameter of about 65 meters. The water in the pool is beautiful orange and turquoise green, the bottom of the pool is covered with rich sulfur deposits, and the geothermal heat will form a lot of fog, which makes the Champagne pool seem to enter a fairyland from a distance, and you have to marvel at the magic of nature.
The whole geothermal park is filled with the smell of rotten eggs brought by sulfur, the overall color is colorful, and the caves and smoke left by volcanic activity are everywhere, which makes people have to sigh the miraculous workmanship of nature!
