What crazy art! He gave Milan an 11-metre middle finger
Even if they do not know anything about this sculpture, I believe that most people will walk by it and take a closer look. The sculpture stands in Piazza degli Affari, a 10-minute walk from Milan's cathedral, facing the building of the Milan Stock Exchange.
Created by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan in 2010, it was originally intended to be exhibited briefly, but due to the discussion and controversy it received after its debut, the work was first extended, and finally after Cattelan announced that it would be given to Milan for free. The sculpture became a permanent "hand" in front of the Milan Stock Exchange.
Cattelan named the work L.O.V.E, an abbreviation of the initials "liberta, odio, vendetta, eternita", which translates into Chinese as: Freedom, hatred, revenge and eternity.
The artist has never revealed the exact meaning of the sculpture, and the two most accepted interpretations are: a critique of the iconic fascist salute; A mockery of Italian finance.
The former explanation makes sense, but the latter is because the work was created during the 2008 financial crisis and was eventually placed in front of the Milan Stock Exchange building. It is said that Milan's financial community had expressed strong dissatisfaction with the sculpture, but in the end had to accept it quietly. By the way, the stock exchange building was built during the fascist era (1932), which is really full of irony.
By the way, this is not the first controversial work of art by the artist Cattelan, who himself is really "rebellious", and previously created "kneeling Hitler" "Him", which was bought for 110 million yuan in 2016.
One of the more interesting works is "La Nona Ora (The Ninth Hour)," created in 2001, which shows then-Pope John Paul II being hit by a meteorite and is on display in the Vatican's Holy See Pavilion at the Venice Art Biennale, for which Cattelan has been appointed curator.
