Located on the border of France and Germany, the Alsace region of France is rich in white wine, with the essence of its unique historical and cultural traditions, many beautiful towns are dotted like pearls among the vast vineyards. Just 8 km from Colmar is the small town of Eguisheim, which, like Colmar, is a beautiful town.

It is one of the most beautiful villages in France and was voted the favorite village of the French in 2013. Since 2003, it has been a member of the club of "Most Beautiful Villages in France" and is known as the cradle of Alsace vineyards. The town has unique castles, old half-timelitted houses and delicious wines. The streets surround the castle in concentric circles, and the cobblestone streets are very nice. The fountain in the central square, the castle of the Count of Eguizan and the colorful church of St. Leon IX are all must-see places for tourists.

We drove from Colmar to Egiesan this afternoon, parked in the free parking lot we had found in advance, and took our time to wander into the town. The beautiful flowers and colorful houses on the roadside make one stop. The further you go in, the more dreamy and fascinating it becomes.


Egiesan has a population of less than 1,800. The town of Egiesan has an oval layout. The once double fortifications were built on two ovals. At the edge of town is a statue of a bishop walking in the air with a three-bar cross, his robe flowing long behind him. The long robe is a stress structure. The shape is bold and ingenious. The sculpture combines serious religious themes with humor.

Church of St. Leon IX

The church is controversial because of its bright colors, but it was built in honor of Count Egiesan. Bruno D 'Eguisan was born here in 1002 and later became Bishop of Thule and Pope Leo IX. There are Oriental style frescoes inside and outside the church, presenting a cultural feast for visitors. The frescoes and Windows in the chapel are very beautiful. In front of the chapel is Place Saint-Leon, where the sun shines brightly. The fountain of Fontaine de Saint-Leon, decorated with flowers, is beautiful.

There's a nice restaurant next to the church with great desserts and great hospitality! The glass Windows look like candy houses! Only one waiter can order basic English.


Count Egiesan's castle

Located in the center of the village, overlooking the beautiful square. Some of the walls of the castle date back to the 8th century and have been rebuilt but still retain traces of the Neo-Roman style. This is a must for history and architecture lovers.

Visit the wine cellar

This is a wine region where locals have been growing grapes for generations. It is the "cradle of Alsace wine". The graphic introduction about the town, the winery in the town, the wine barrels on the house, all reflect the characteristics of the town. It is no exaggeration to say that wine is the town's past and present, is the town's connotation. Producers and co-operatives in Egiesant have wine cellars where you can taste wine and learn about the local winemaking tradition.



Eguisheim Grands Crus Wine Tour

Every Saturday at 3:30 p.m. from mid-June to mid-September and on Tuesdays in August, visitors can take a guided tour of the vineyard to learn more about grape varieties and winemaking.

Egiesan Grape Growers Festival

It is one of the oldest wine festivals in Germany and is held every year on the last weekend of August. The courtyard and wine cellar are open to all, offering the opportunity to sample Eguizan grape varieties and Alsace specialities. Music, dancing and folk parades fill the village with excitement, a celebration for all ages.

Saveurs Musicales

It is held every September in the famous setting of the Church of Saint Pierre and Paul and its 13th century Romanesque bell tower. Combine fine wine with music to present a unique artistic feast.

Egiesan Christmas Market

Every December, the Eguizan Christmas Market is one of the most traditional Christmas markets in Alsace. The brightly lit village has many activities and a strong Christmas atmosphere.

Unity Rock Festival

On March 23, 2024, The 6th Unity Rock Festival featured three bands: Lumberjacks, Trapoline and The Manekis. If you catch a live concert, it will add a lot of fun to the trip.

Concert by the confluence vocal ensemble

On June 6, 2024, in Castle Square, the Confluence Vocal Orchestra will give a concert. The program includes works from Estonia, Finland, Ingria and Sweden.

Eguissan and Colmar are the two pearls of Alsace in France.
