Wistman´s wood! Meet the elf's home!

📍Wistman’s Wood
Located in Dartmoor Reserve, one of three remote high-altitude oak forests in Dartmoor, Devon, England, it is known for its endless and mysterious forests, rocks and lichens, a very ancient woodland that has grown over many centuries, with twisted branches, moss-covered boulders, and an air filled with the aroma of ancient wood and the smell of damp earth, It looks like the hidden fairies and elves in fairy tales and makes people feel as if they have entered an ancient dream.

Wistman's Wood, Dartmoor, looks as if it has not been visited by humans for centuries. It is almost entirely covered in moss and greenery, and the rough twisted branches that grow between the rocks give the forest an even more magical atmosphere
Many writers have described it as the most haunted place on Dartmoor, and it has been named "one of the strangest forests in the world" by the press.

The 400-year-old woodlands, miniature oaks, boulders and moss, are like magic from the Lord of the Rings, the rocks covered in moss and lichen & the entwined stunted oaks look mysterious and incredibly magical, just like a science fiction movie. Myths and supernatural stories are attached to the forest, but it is definitely interesting. This 7.6km circular trail is located near Princestown, Devon. With more than 50 species of moss and 100 species of lichen, as well as an abundance of wildlife, this mysterious landscape is also of high scientific interest, so be sure to pay attention when visiting ️ Protect the environment!

Hiking trails:

You can start the route from the small car park opposite the Twin Bridges Hotel. Follow this road, stone walls on the left, past cottages (with friendly barking dogs), then continue straight ahead and the river is on the left. There may be cattle and sheep, and dogs if needed.

The woods could be seen in the distance. Litford Tower is on the right. The road splits before reaching the woods: the road on the left takes you through the woods (beautiful old trees, mossy boulders), and the road on the right goes around the woods (the woods will be on your right). Leave the woods and follow the path to a wood that may have once been part of an old forest; On the left is this cluster of trees, on the right is Longaford Tor, walking towards the stone wall and the river on the left. This area is likely to be swampy in winter.

Just before you reach the small dam, pass through the stone wall, next to a tall wooden pole. Caution is required after heavy rainfall. Follow the meadows/canals across the moors - sheep, lambs and cattle may graze here. Continue along the canal and through the forest.

All the way to Beardown Farm. Turn left (sign) and walk towards the farm. Follow the path on the farm to your left, go through a metal gate (the path is signposted), and follow the path until you reach an old bridge. There's a sign. Turn left into the woods. Continue along the river on the left, past the fence (the last fence before the main road is not allowed for dogs) until you reach the B3357. Turn left and walk along the main road for a few minutes towards the Twin Bridges Hotel.

⚠️ The wildlife in the landscape is of high scientific research significance, pay attention to environmental protection when visiting.
⚠️ There is no food or water in the park. It is recommended to have some.
