It is a good idea to check with Sony to find out if there is a firmware upgrade for the CD or DVD. Check your cable, it may be faulty. I tried the lowest possible speed and it didn't help. Works like a charm now.

My case was identical: writing DVD+R (Verbatim, dye type "MCC 004") from the same package began to fail but DVD-R (also Verbatim, dye type "TYG03") was accepted as usual. The easiest "fix" is to burn at a preset slower speed, like 4x. Thank you very much man!!! Unbuntu's Linux kernel was only the messenger between libburn and drive. "Power calibration error" is the human readable text that is registered in the MMC specification for that code.

I didn't realise that turning writing off using the inbuilt explorer "burn to CD" option didn't actually diable the Imapi service - it was apparently loaded when writing to a disc! If you have you can read this article for a quick fix on this issue and prevent it from ever happening again.
