This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. I don't think it's necessary to use the stable kernel, but you could. There is one little line I missed about copying the newly built kernel to /boot. For example do "uname -r" to get your kernel version and "ls -l /usr/src/linux" to get your kernel sources version.
