Several functions may not work. At this point the only thing I can do is bring up Task Manager with Ctrl+Alt+Del. This will get a deeper look so all junk can be removed. CTRL+ALT+DEL has no effect.

The interesting thing is that it mentions one of the causes as upgrading from XP Home to XP Pro, which seems like a possible scenario.
