Brenton, I only edit there to test something I've broken and am not sure of the answer. I should mention I also have grub2 installed on dev/sda1 though I don't get as far there: it just shows the grub 'command line'. If it is certain they are valid, then there is the possibility of using a flawed GRUB version (0.93.20031222). If that fails too, try to emerge grub-static which is currently stable on amd64 and unstable on x86 and (~x86).

What are you trying to accomplish with that? Then change your 'root (hd0,0)' to that partition.
