I noticed you need to install the package smartmontools to actually have the smartctl command. Well, I would suggest getting a Live Linux CD (such as Knoppix) and hoping for the best. Some of your files are likely gone, but with some luck, you might be able to find them in /lost+found under the file system's mount root (meaning for example /data/lost+found if where are no extra load on HDD...
