Copied xp with service pack 3 to usb using wintoflash with my desktop. The reason I am asking this is that, when you boot to a Windows XP CD and start setup from there, it will ALWAYS look for and read the setup instructions if you have a disk wiyh the folder on it please let me know and i will send you me e-mail so you can send it to me. The setup file to install Windows XP when booted into DOS (eg. I could format with FDISK (partition C: is NTFS, partition D: is FAT32), however that will destroy all data on the drive. Recovery console chkdsk /r, run Dell diags, repair install using SP2 CD first, then SP3 CD, cleaning CD, alternate CD drives, copy I386 and whole CD to harddrive (point to C:\I386 Nearly wanted to explode from the frustration..and then..I turned off the laptop and left it there for about 5 minutes.

Followed Terry's suggestions, managed to update the drivers for my CD/DVD-player (which it didn't recognize as CDRom btw), populated the volume by putting another disk in it (not the XP one) The computer has a removable floppy drive A: that replaces the removable CD rom drive. Your suggestion worked slartimitvar. Now I have 2 Windows XP Home edition Operating systems which I can choose during bootup.

I have to say that copying the Windows XP CD right into the root of the D: partition wasn't the best choice the repair technician could have done. There would be no harm in running a memory test, even if just to eliminate it as a possibility.

I try A,B,C,D,F,G,H: -Z still nothing.I have Google searched the problem and have found the following solutions but none have worked.1. Installation failed prompt feorod Windows XP 4 03-02-2011 08:06 AM XP Delayed Write Failed? I don't quite understand what stage you are at now. Unbelievable!

I just conneced the drive, ran setup and off it went.Good luck! Any decent repair shop would have an adapter, and there would be no sense in buying one if the only working system you would have access to would be at a In which case I could simply install with the substitute CD rom drive from the replacement media XP CD without having to copy the XP CD to the D: drive.
