Thankfully, the FTP upload in IE8 under VirtualXP is working perfectly so I can still upload files even if it is a bit convoluted. The other is the Windows Home Server Cleanup Tool which tests if your home server files are readable. Great version of Windows, except for this annoying little bug. If not, have you tried a System Restore to a time before the issue appeared?

And after days of searching I finally found this software: Long Path Tool.
