Went to Auto Zone to pull the CE code, they came up with P0402 eccesive egr flow. The engine could be running rough if the valve is stuck open. The most likely solution is to replace the DPFE sensor. It is part of the vehicle emmissions system, and is used to reduce combustion temperature and pressure to control Oxides of Nitrogen.

One way to test for this condition is to test drive the vehicle with a data streaming scanner and study the EGR Position Sensor readings. The above voltages are checked with the sensor electrical connector plugged in and the wires are back probed with the Red lead of a digital volt meter. I cleaned it with carb cleaner and compressed air. Now you could take your vehicle to the dealership but they could also just replace the EGR, DPFE and possibly other parts at a very high cost.

It's otherwise running fine. The repair center do not find anything. The EGR temperature sensor is registering too much of a temperature change when the EGR valve is opened from a partly blocked exhaust catalyst causing excessive back pressure in the EGR FordŽ is a registered trademark of the Ford Motor Company. I cleaned the throttle body and it was completly clogged in the farthest port from the EGR and almost closed at the closest port to EGR.

I don't think I can count how many EGR valves I bypassed in the old days (it is legal to do so in my state). An EGR that has excessive flow can cause the engine to hesitate or stall on acceleration or have a very rough engine idle. Regardless of whether the engine is off, or running at any RPM? Verify that the front Oxygen Sensor readings drop and that Short Term Fuel Trim increases when the EGR valve opens and then returns to normal when the valve is closed.

If it did, (as my '97 with the 4.0 Ltr V-6 does) the problem would probably be resolved. Your problem WILL be fixed. Short Term Fuel Trim should increase when the valve opens and decrease when the valve closes properly Disconnect the EGR valve (either vacuum or electrical type) and test drive the vehicle. With more searching I discovered severl comments about aftermarket units. It was caused by the EGR position senor. If I knew what model year and engine size you have I can give you the wire colors of the sensor and which wire has what voltage. __________________ My Vehicle: 04/04 A volt reading that is over 2 volts may not set a P0402 code, but could can cause some of the previously mentioned problems or codes.
