This error i am getting when iam copying files from my CD to System.It is not copying and saying error like "Can't copy somepage :error performing inpage operation". i had the same error message. Yesterday i ran a CHKDSK... 2 mins in and i see this; CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 3)... Thank you in advance for your advice, I’ve found the comments on this site invaluable over the years.

I absolutely had to register to these forums just to say thank you to all who contributed and to let you know that this thread is still helping save hard drives!!!!!!!!!!! Then unless you have a lightning strike or power surge your data is safe on another drive if your root drive eats the big one.Get Hippied out! Your cache administrator is webmaster. That being the case, sirbounty's suggestion of diskmgmt.msc is probably where I'd start.

I got all excited about the diagnostic code; I thought perhaps it would tell me what was wrong so I could fix and/or avoid it. I have lots of data in my external hdd which I need to recover. Thanks all... My disk is now …….

Beamed with joy at my accomplishment.I could've moved the hard drive to the other computer and then transferred the files with Knoppix, but the computer couldn't be sacrificed for that long by R. Have had all the above symptoms on my external HD for days now, ie G: drive showing in MY COMPUTER but unable to access contents.

Not heard of these disks but will track some down. If any of the comments above helped you, then you should select it as the "answer" by clicking the Accept button next to the Expert's name (at the right side of CHKDSK is verifying security descriptors (stage 3 of 5)... I only know so much!

Thanks in advance. Got all my files running.. Win2000 SP4 has been causing many problems as it installs ISS, sometimes improperly, and has to be reinstalled...BUT I do not think that is your problem. The HD does not boot up if I put it back in the system.
