You will need to remove a small plate on the back of the lens assembly to look at the gears where you are likely to find a bit of sand or Can't thank you enough! I was ready to toss it. I bought it from someone who said he got it last April, so I'll send it in to them and see what happens.

Thanks for the fix! A better solution (not provided by Canon) is to connect the camera to the TV or a computer. No major improvements, but it is a bit nicer. Turn off the camera.

Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Repeat the procedure until the lens extends all the way. If the lens extends a little further than the previous time, again prevent the lens from retracting and repeat the cleaning process.
