So I can't get a good grip on the lens barrel to try to pull it out. Be sure to use a soft cloth or something similar as to not scratch your lens or casing. We locked down the site within a couple of minutes of the intrusion and after much investigation have been able to remove the changes the intruders made. I just wanted to say thanks for the suggestion and confirm that it also worked for me on the E550. When I put it back together the zoom mechanism extended and stayed there. i've tried all the suggestions but none of them are working :(it says lens error, restart camera.

You should notice some small particles of dirt (sand or grit) on the tiny gears, in my experience most ?zoom error? Fix #1a: If new batteries didn't work, try pressing and holding the Menu, Function, Function Set, or OK button while turning the camera on.
