I don't think that cleaning the fan related to the LAN port failure. Now a day later I turn it back on and the fan is working full time with no problems. Im guessing that the fan not spinning at all is the problem??? But logically, it doesn’t make sense to have it on there, does it? Try using the laptop with only one memory module installed. The laptop runs fine and the fan is fine when I dont try installing something, like surfing the web. This fan failed to turn on its own, but clearly would spin longer than friction would normally let it. I open the laptop up and it is HOT. If you press the power on switch 6 or 7 times quickly it will most likely burn out the cpu destroying it so dont do it. Lots of dust came out.

Then I sprayed some electrical oxide cleaner onto the PCB card where one can see the electronical components inside the fan, and then I let it rest until the spray had I did not have an installation CD so put another CD in just to get the system moving. Just make sure to find the right substitute for your older fan. Days, weeks, months… I guess it'll work until you burn the CPU.
