You will not loose any data when you replace the fan. I have a 2378-FVU myself and it's a ThinkPad T42. Take a look in these two pictures. Thats the best.

I have no clue what a "FAN ERROR" is and know very little of computers.

One other thing I saw elsewhere online was that sometime you will get the FAN ERROR on startup if there's an issue with the battery. Doing this for taking backup is ok.. Please enter an answer.
