If I start up Services.msc I do find the Media Center Extender Service, but it is not running and the start up type is set at manual. I never got WMC working, though I stopped trying shortly after messing with the first few things mentioned in this thread.

HOWEVER, while rebooting my PC two nights ago let me get the Windows Media Center Extender working on the Xbox 360 that night, I tried to watch something through Windows Media On Fri, 3 Feb 2012 13:24:22 +0000, Scott W.
