Recently encountered a similar problem and found this topic instead a solution. tmp_name has the temporary filename on the server. You should be using $temp_dir = $_FILES['files'][$key]['tmp_name']; ^^^^^^--- missing this part. $image_type = etc.... If a non-image file is supplied, it may be incorrectly detected as an image and the function will return successfully.
