The only break in the cycle is when the road is downhill, but it continues as soon as the road levels back off.

Backprobe the coolant temp sensor?Do you think the PCM is being fooled into energizing the CANP when it shouldn't be? Does the computer continually attempt to cycle the purge solenoid, and is that perhaps why the CEL goes on and off? Be sure you've cleared the codes as above and retest. I did the same test over again and the voltage was in range.

Also the book is stating to have removed the negative battery cable when clearing the KAM and I removed the positive cable, would that make a difference?

Whenever I see that I replace the t-stat. RECONNECT CANP solenoid. Breakout box installed, PCM disconnected. It is usually still in OD when this happens, I have to depress the gas pedal almost to the floor to make it downshift and smooth out again.

Can someone help me figure out what this is, and whether or not it is important enough to fix. Finally, today I checked for codes with a KOEO test (won't start at all).

I found the canister purge solenoid and it is in good looking shape with no visible issues. I'd guess there's either an obstruction in the exhaust pipe directing the exhaust away from it, preventing it from detecting & operating normally (not likely), OR there may be a fault The engine still runs rough and backfires as before. Damaged Powertrain Control Module (PCM).

Measure resistance between Test Pin 11, 15, 31 or 54 (refer to pinpoint test schematic ) and Test Pins 37 and 57 at the breakout box. Checked sol purge solenoid by unplugging harness, hooking up vacuum guage and starting engine. When driving at interstate speed on cruise for 30 minutes this morning, it would downshift just trying to maintain speed on the flat road! I'm picking up a pressure tester today, and I'll also test the ECT, ACT, and MAF again.

This time it was with the engine warm, idling in drive at a stoplight, during my drive to work.

Sorry my on-line Ford manuals don't go back to 95 so I can't look at the pin test right now. According to the pinpoint test this could indicate a short to power, either a wiring problem or a bad PCM (PCM sending power to the CANP when it shouldn't be), since They had two in series coming from the canister.

Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Solenoid is functioning. Both need to be replaced if I am correct. REMOVE breakout box and Scan Tool. Wouldn't this mean it also gets PCM input from either the TP sensor (idle vs. Thank you. So two questions: What can it be?

Thanks! if your ect is open your pcm will think it's -40. Yes No GO to KD9 . How do I check it?

I drove the truck again and this time it started out with the same miss, backfire, CEL thing. Its great that I got the code, not so great cause I don't have a clue as to what that is? Measure CANP solenoid resistance. I would check the connectors first for corrosion then put some dielectric grease clear the codes and try again.

I replaced the coil pack with a used one that checked out. I went ahead and replaced the O2 sensor as I figured it couldn't hurt. I decided to pull the vacuum hose of the throttle body, and sure enough, the CANP solenoid was open at idle (I tasted gas fumes). KD7 CHECK CANP RESISTANCE Key off. Are there any other numbers I need off of the label? The diaphragm ruptures allowing excess fuel into the intake, sometimes to the point of not starting.
