And like most retro computers,... In my case the '/etc/machine-id' and the '/var/lib/dbus/machine-id' files both existed but contained different values. If I list the sound devices it shows two Nvidia HDMI sound devices and the onboard AMD soundchip. I should have given some news, but since other people had the same kind of issue, I'm glad they found a solution through this thread.

For me applying a software mixing configuration to my .asoundrc solved the problem (see http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Asoundrc#Software_mixing). for example, I have a friend with some PulseAudio problems caused by conflict between the HDMI audio from his graphics card and his onboard sound.
