Hi,I read your advises to ortzinator for problem with Error performing inpage operation, which led me to KNOPPIX.First I have to say that now I will sleep better because I saw, Let windows check the hard disk (UNCHECK search for bad sectors!).

That and Restorer 2000 are both great for restoring data from an otherwise dead drive (and of course, much more preferable to paying 1-2k for a professional data recovery service). You might also want to try some diagnostics, which are dependent upon your drive manufacturer... Funny noises always concern me, and I'd lean towards something physical (in which case I'd start looking for that sleeping bag) if it's a standalone drive. I don't get this because the partition can be read with Knoppix but not a fresh install.

I tried to clone with Acronis and it failed. My disk is now ……. pls fix this error. I've read a couple of boards that report a similar problem with sp4, although there seemed to be a decent lag (at least a week) betwen installing sp4 & the error.

IMO, it's unlikely that SP4 is the culprit at this point, and nothing leads me to believe virus-like activity. It took about 4 hours to complete it's thing, but praise God I can now access my files.
